When one considers the major apparatus manufacturers, Ward LaFrance may have been a late-comern, but in New York City. This manufacturer is one of the most famous of the big-name builders. The first of the long line of Ward LaFrance Pumpers arrived in 1939. During the late l9140’s rigs became more functional in design with numerous military overtones, such as: flat fenders, little chrome, large floodlights etc. These vehicles were known as the D-Series with open cabs. In the 1950’s the 750 GPM Pumpers show up with the 250-gallon water tanks., Two additional conversions took place in the 1960’s a pumper conversion into a foam apparatus and the quad was converted into a Relay Hose Wagon. These workhorses went a long way to get New York City through many trying years. Fully illustrated with B&W plus many color photos. Softbound.
