Description

Buckboard Fire Apparatus. The Original Cab-Forward. By: Anthony G. Buono.   The buckboard had only a brief period in the fire service a century ago when this type of fire apparatus were built. The buckboard style represents one of the most significant configurations of early motor fire apparatus. The roots of the descriptive term ‘buckboard’ are explain in the first chapter of this unique book and the term ‘buckboard’ may be somewhat imprecise or inaccurate. Seeing what is presently serving modern fire departments and called: ‘engines’ with ladders and ‘ladders’ or ‘trucks’ with pumps, the ‘buckboard’ is certainly an applicable name for this cab-forward. So hop on and enjoy the ride through history. Hang on tight because there will be no enclosed riding positions, no seatbelts, no windshields or any of twenty-first century safety stuff on your journey, where the driver sits ahead or aside of the engine. This style of fire fighting apparatus is often overlooked despite its historical significance. Buckboard Fire Apparatus is the Original Cab-Forward truck. Author, Anthony Buono, has been fascinated with fire trucks since a child and grew up in Flatbush, part of Brooklyn in New York City. He is presently an attorney by profession and a volunteer firefighter with the Valatie Fie Department in upstate New York. Much of the information and or photographs in this book are from the Library of Congress, the Nebraska Firefighters Museum and Education Center, the SPAAMFAA – Archives of the Society for the Preservation and Appreciation of Antique Motor Fire Apparatus in America, and periodicals such as Fire and Water Engineering, and the Municipal Journal. Plus support from the FDNY firefighters retired at the Retirement Home and Museum in Hudson, New York. Enjoy! B&W Photos. Softbound. Pages 244. Book Measures approximately 8 1/2 inches wide X 11 inches high.
