Van Pelt Fire Apparatus 1925 to 1987 – Photo Archive – by Chuck Madderom. The P. E. Van Pelt Inc., of Oakdale, California (Van Pelt Fire Trucks), was the largest builder of fire apparatus west of the Rocky Mountains. From the time of incorporation in 1925 until 1987, Van Pelt built approximately 3,200 fire apparatus of all types. Early Van Pelt apparatus were built on almost any commercially available chassis of the customer’s choosing. Records indicate greater use of Dodge and White trucks. It is interesting to note that Van Pelt built more fire apparatus on White truck chassis (of all sizes) than any other fire apparatus builder in the USA. Although the Van Pelt name no longer appears on new apparatus the tradition of innovation and quality is being carried on by four former employees. High quality B&W photos. Softbound. Pgs. 126.
